Scene 4 Emilia from Othello Act 4, Scene 2 Thaisa from Pericles Act 2, Scene 5. Cassio responds and laughs about this, making comments about how silly she is in thinking he loves her. Iago tells Othello to hide a little ways away so that he can overhear a conversation between Iago and Cassio, one where Cassio will clearly incriminate himself. Iago tells him to meet him later, and he will speak with Othello to “smooth things over” and let Cassio know the outcome of his persuasions. When Othello has his “fit”, Cassio appears.

He is talking with Iago about the handkerchief still, and its significance in being found but, soon, Iago whips Othello into an even greater fury through mere insinuation, and Othello takes the bait. Iago has accomplished his mission of planting suspicions in Othello’s mind. Othello is trying, even after swearing that Desdemona was unfaithful, not to condemn her too harshly. Iago delights in this, and he takes this opportunity to meet with Cassio to set another “chance” meeting. Othello’s thoughts are so consumed with the thoughts and visions in his mind of Cassio and Desdemona being together that he seems to have a seizure, where he is not in his right mind. As Othello unfolds, Iago, the antagonist, does all he can to break up Othello’s, the protagonist, marriage to his new bride Desdemona. He sees her when he needs the company of a woman. Though Act 3, Scene 2 of Shakespeare’s Othello is extremely short, it still helps to set details in place for the villain’s plot. Othello will slap her in the face, and she is truly confused by his actions. Public figures talk about the piece of Shakespeare that inspires them most.The pieces are read by well known actors. She does not understand the change in Othello–and his suggestions that she has been untrue. Upon hearing this, Othello becomes weak and collapses. He witnesses Othello’s slap to Desdemona. In a conversation with Cassio, Othello hears that Cassio has confessed to sleeping with Desdemona. He is unaware of the deception that is going on behind the scenes.ĭesdemona’s cousin from Venice, who brings word that Othello must return to Venice. He has a “fit” (perhaps an epileptic seizure) which could be viewed as another “dig” about being an outsider–the Moor from Africa (black).īelieves Iago’s lies and views Iago as a loyal friend. He is obsessed with the idea that Desdemona has been unfaithful. His plan is unfolding quickly, and the characters involved will begin to be affected by the lies. In the final scene of act 4, Emilia develops as a character and presents a view of gender that is progressive relative to the Elizabeth-era context of Othello’s publication. With the soliloquys and the actions of the plot, it is obvious that Iago’s hatred of Othello is all consuming.
